Brand in Focus: Spyderco
If a knife has a round hole in the blade, most people instantly think Spyderco. That hole is not a gimmick. It is one of those quiet ideas that changed how folding knives work, and it came from a small company in Golden, Colorado that has spent almost fifty years doing things its own way. This week we put Spyderco under the spotlight and pull a few of our favourites off the shelf.
Where Spyderco comes from
Spyderco was founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser. The first product was not even a knife, it was the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker, a sharpening system you still see on benches today. When the company did move into folders, it brought two features that felt radical at the time. The round opening hole let you flick the blade open with one hand, reliably, wearing gloves or not. And a proper pocket clip meant the knife rode high and ready instead of rattling around at the bottom of a pocket. Both ideas were copied across the whole industry. That tells you something about how good they were.
Since then the recipe has stayed consistent. Leaf shaped blades for real cutting geometry, ergonomic handles with a forward finger choil, and an appetite for trying new steels before anyone else does. Spyderco knives are made in several places, including Golden in Colorado, Seki City in Japan and Taichung in Taiwan, and each factory has its own reputation for a particular kind of quality.
The full size benchmark: Para-Military 2
Ask a room full of knife people for one folder that just works and the Para-Military 2 comes up again and again. It uses Spyderco's patented Compression Lock, which is strong, easy to close one handed, and keeps your fingers well clear of the edge. The pocket friendly one: Para 3
The Para 3 is the Para-Military 2 shrunk down for people who want the same lock, the same feel and a bit less knife in the pocket. Nothing important got lost in the translation. You get the Compression Lock, the confident grip and the slicing blade in a package that disappears more easily into everyday carry. For a lot of people this is the sweet spot between capable and discreet.
The lightweight classics: Endura 4 and Delica 4
Before the premium folders there were the FRN lightweights, and they are still some of the smartest knives Spyderco makes. The Endura 4 is the bigger of the pair, a back lock folder with a fibreglass reinforced handle that weighs almost nothing yet takes serious use in stride. This version runs Spyderco's SPY27 steel and a bright cobalt blue handle that is easy to spot in a bag.
The Delica 4 is the smaller sibling, the knife plenty of long time Spyderco fans reach for out of pure habit. This one carries a K390 blade, a tool steel that holds an edge for a very long time, wrapped in the same light and grippy FRN body. It is the definition of a knife you forget you are carrying until you need it.
Where to start on a budget: Tenacious
You do not need to spend a lot to get the Spyderco experience. The Tenacious brings the round hole, a liner lock, a flat ground blade and textured G-10 scales at a price that makes it an easy first Spyderco or a no worries beater. It is the knife we hand to people who are not sure the hobby is for them, because it usually convinces them.
