Brand in Focus: Zero Tolerance
Some knives feel like they were built to survive the person carrying them. That is pretty much the reputation Zero Tolerance has earned, and owners have their own words for it. Early customers called their ZTs "real beasts" and "proudly overbuilt", and the brand still quotes that with a bit of pride. This year ZT turns 20, so it felt like the right moment to take a closer look.
Built for people who can't afford a failure
Zero Tolerance is a brand of Kai USA Ltd. in Tualatin, Oregon, the same company behind Kershaw (we covered them in our Kershaw brand feature). Kai USA belongs to the Japanese Kai Group, a large maker of razors, surgical tools and housewares.
ZT launched in 2006 with a clear brief: a Made in USA line of hard-use knives for the military, law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical crews. The first models were combat knives. Between 2006 and 2008 came the military style 0100, the 0500 M.U.D.D. and the tactical 0610ST.
Then, in 2009, ZT released the 0350. It was smaller than most of the range but still a proper handful, and it found a crowd nobody had really catered to: people who wanted a beefy folder that still rides comfortably in a pocket. Two years later the 0777, an in-house design with ZT's patented Sub-Frame Lock and a carbon fiber scale, won Overall Knife of the Year at Blade Show. From then on ZT wasn't only the tank brand anymore.
What you get with a ZT
Every ZT is built at the Kai USA factory in Tualatin. The steels are the premium powder metallurgy grades you would hope for at this level: CPM 20CV, CPM S30V and CPM S35VN, more and more often CPM MagnaCut, and for work knives CPM M4, CPM Cru-Wear or CPM 3V. Handles are G10, titanium or carbon fiber, sometimes Micarta.
Many folders open on KVT, ZT's ball bearing system, and lock with a titanium Frame Lock that gets a hardened steel lockbar insert. Newer models also use DuraLock, the crossbar lock Kai USA also builds into Kershaw knives. Designs come from the in-house team (sold as "ZT Originals") and from outside names like Ken Onion and Dmitry Sinkevich.
0350TS: where the EDC story began
The 0350 is the knife that turned ZT into an everyday carry brand, and the 0350TS is the same Ken Onion design with a tiger stripe PVD coating. You get an 8.25 cm CPM S30V blade with assisted opening via flipper, a Liner Lock, textured G10 and a clip for four carry positions. At 176 g it is not a featherweight. That's sort of the point.
0545: the gentleman's ZT
If "overbuilt" sounds like too much for your jeans, look at the Zero Tolerance Original MagnaCut 0545. It weighs 57 g, the CPM MagnaCut blade is only 2.3 mm thick with a full flat grind, and it opens on KVT bearings. Carbon fiber front, titanium Frame Lock behind, no visible clip screws. It slices like a kitchen knife and disappears in a shirt pocket.
0452CF: long, lean and well known
Dmitry Sinkevich designed the Zero Tolerance 0452CF, and it has become one of the most recognizable ZT shapes since its release in 2015. The 10.4 cm CPM S35VN drop point has a two-tone finish, runs on KVT and locks with a titanium Frame Lock. Official weight is 122 g, which is surprisingly little for that much blade.
0203: the real beast
The Zero Tolerance 203 is ZT going back to its roots. A 4.1 mm thick CPM M4 blade with black PVD coating, fully machined G10 over thick steel liners, phosphor bronze washers and a DuraLock with a stepped release you pull back to close. The pivot bolt runs through the whole handle. At 187 g this is a work knife you don't baby.
0004: the bushcraft option
ZT's fixed blades deserve more attention than they get. The Zero Tolerance 0004 has a 10.7 cm clip point in CPM Cru-Wear (HRC 63 to 64) with a dark bronze Cerakote coating. Loosen a few screws with an Allen key and the canvas Micarta scales come off, revealing a skeletonized tang you can wrap in paracord. It ships in a Kansas made leather sheath. If you want something bigger, the Zero Tolerance ZT-6 brings a 15.2 cm CPM 3V blade and a Kydex sheath.
Which one first?
For a single ZT to carry every day, we would pick the 0545, because it shows how refined the brand has become. If you want the classic ZT feeling, go for the 0350TS or the 203.
